Guild to display quilts at Allegheny Valley Hospital, July 2007

Our guild will be displaying quilts at Allegheny Valley Hospital during the month of July 2007. There are 2 hallways with room for hanging quilts with a maximum length of 4 feet. All walls have hooks for hanging, so please provide quilts that are ready to hang on hooks. (Hooks are placed 3 feet apart). Quilts are due at the June 2007 Meeting. Please include a brief summary of the quilt of your inspiration. Also please write 'NOT FOR SALE' if you're not selling your quilt since many items displayed at the hospital are sold in the gift store.

Requested Recipes:

Sour Cream Raisin Bars

Crust:
  • 1 c. brown sugar
  • 1 c. butter
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 ¾ c. uncooked oatmeal
  • 1 ¾ c. flour
Filling:
  • 2 c. raisins
  • 3 egg yolks, beaten
  • 1 ½ c. sour cream
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2 T. cornstarch

To prepare crust; cream brown sugar and butter. Add baking soda, oats, and flour. Mix well. Press ½ of mixture in 9" x 13" baking pan. Bake at 350oF for 7 mins. To prepare filling simmer raisins in water to cover until raisins are soft. Drain. In a heavy saucepan combine egg yolks, sour cream, sugar and cornstarch and cook over medium heat until it begins to thicken, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in raisins. Pour over baked crust. Sprinkle remaining ½ of crumb mixture over top. Bake at 350oF for 15-20 mins. Cool. Cut. Refrigerate. From the kitchen of Doris H.

Millionaire's Shortbread

  • 1 ½ c. all-purpose flour
  • ½ c. butter, cut into small pieces
  • 3 tsp. light brown sugar, sifted
Topping:
  • 4 T. butter
  • 3 T. light brown sugar
  • 14 oz. can condensed milk
  • 5 ½ oz. milk chocolate

Sift flour into bowl and rub in butter with fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Add the sugar and mix to form a firm dough. Press dough into well greased 9" square pan. Prick with a fork. Bake at 375oF for 20 min., until lightly golden. Cool completely in pan. To make the topping place the butter, sugar, and condensed milk in a nonstick sauce pan and cook over a gentle heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture comes to a boil. Reduce the heat and cook for 4-5 min. until the caramel is pale golden and thick and is coming away from the sides of the pan. Pour over the shortbread base and let cool. When the caramel topping is firm, melt the milk chocolate in a double boiler. Spread the melted chocolate over the topping, set aside in a cool place, then cut the shortbread into squares or bars to serve. From the kitchen of Christy H.
